Nando’s is proud to be founding member of the Sustainable Chicken Forum (SCF). We’re one of 18 hospitality brands who have come together to take a holistic view of chicken production in our supply chains. The welfare of these chickens, the environmental impact of chicken farming and the security of chicken supply for the long term are all crucial for us. These are all interlinked and must be addressed together in order for us to make long term continuous improvement on chicken welfare standards
This is why we have set up the Sustainable Chicken Forum, to bring together the power of hospitality to jointly explore these challenges and find solutions. The SCF will:
- Share best practice and champion efforts across hospitality to improve chicken welfare.
- Explore opportunities for further research into the challenges facing the poultry sector in balancing welfare improvements with environmental impact and consistent supply.
- Engage in policy development that supports the British supply chain to grow as part of European and global poultry supply chains In the UK this will include advocating for a joined-up approach to poultry policy that overcomes restrictive planning rules and aligns animal welfare and farming priorities.
- Feed into the UK Government’s ongoing review of breeding practice and welfare impacts.
- The SCF will work with all other parts of the poultry supply chain: farmers, producers, retailers, NGOs and government to address the challenges facing chicken supply and deliver progress on the chicken welfare journey.
As a member of the SCF, Nando’s is committing to
- Continuing to improve the welfare of chickens in our supply chain.
- Supporting evidence-led work into changes that can drive welfare improvements alongside reducing impact on the environment and chicken supply.
- Continuing to use existing reporting mechanisms to demonstrate progress as a responsible business in areas such as welfare outcomes, environmental impact, water consumption, deforestation in supply chain, as well as economic contribution through jobs and growth.
Through the work of the SCF, we believe we can help shape a new direction for the hospitality sector, one that delivers better outcomes on chicken welfare, environmental health and economic growth.
