What’s our connection to the Better Chicken Commitment?
Doing right by our chickens really matters to us, and we’re proud of the progress we’ve made. Over the past few years we’ve invested tens of millions with our suppliers to improve chicken welfare.
Today, all the chickens in our supply chain have more space to move, natural light, and enrichments like perches and pecking objects to keep them active and healthy. We monitor welfare closely with our suppliers and we’re always looking for ways to do better.
We’re proud to say that for our entire UK supply chain, we achieved four of the six Better Chicken Commitments (BCC) on improved environmental enrichment, natural light, humane slaughter and independent auditing, and were very close on stocking density. The one commitment we couldn’t meet was the move to slower growing breeds. UK farmers simply don’t produce enough of these birds, and switching would almost double the carbon footprint because they need more feed, more space and more time to grow.

We’re grateful to the BCC for driving higher standards, but given how the UK chicken industry works today, we believe it’s time for a more balanced, future-focused approach. That’s why we’ve joined UKHospitality’s Sustainable Chicken Forum, alongside other leading brands. It brings welfare, environmental impact and industry realities together, and jointly we’ll keep pushing to raise standards, reduce our footprint and keep our chicken affordable and delicious.
